New This Week February 20, 2023 Plant of the Week: Hellebores Hellebores are one the earliest perennial flowers to bloom, their rose-like blossoms signifying spring is on the horizon! Hellebores, also known as Lenten Roses, are very easy to grow in part shade to full sun conditions, provided they have some shelter from harsh winter winds and receive sunlight in the winter. The plant is extremely low-maintenance, only requiring you to clean off dried leaves occasionally (after the severe cold of this past December, you may need to cut back more frost burnt leaves than usual). The blooms on this evergreen perennial last months (sometimes December-May depending on the cultivar!). HELLEBORE 101: USDA Growing Zones: 3-9 Sun Exposure: Ideally partial shade in summer and direct sun in winter, but highly adaptable Soil Needs: Moist but well-drained Water: Like moisture, but don't let them sit in water. Once established they become more drought tolerant and shouldn't need any supplemental watering. Care: Easy Bloom Time: Mid-winter-late spring Flower Colors : White, pink, purple, or yellow Height: 1-2 feet Spread: 1-2 feet We will have multiple varieties of Hellebores available when we open this spring including Apricot Beauty, Winter Queen, Ashwood, Sunflare, and Dorothy's Dawn!

New This Week June 20, 2023 How to Prepare Your Gardens for this Week's Heavy Rains Tips on how to prepare your garden for heavy rains, and what to do after, including how to maximize drainage, what to cover, and how to support tall plants, to keep your garden thriving all summer long! How to prep your garden for the heavy rains expected this week, and what to do after: BEFORE 🌧 Drainage - clear/dig ditches deeper to ensure water is being funneled away from low areas and to avoid wash-out of gardens or driveways + move or cover any containers that don't have good drainage and can flood. 🌧 Support tall plants, as heavy rains and wind can cause breakage or flopping that may be hard for them to recover from. 🌧 Cover delicate & rot-prone plants with plastic sheeting/pots to prevent damage/excess saturation, but be sure to uncover on occasion to allow for air flow to prevent mildew. 🌧 Plant those plants you haven't gotten to yet - the best time for them to get established is with days of rain ahead! AFTER 🌦 Uncover all covered containers/plants immediately to allow for air flow & sun to hit them. 🌦 Check containers and beds for washed out soil and exposed roots, re-cover any exposed areas with compost/soil before they get burnt and damage the plant. 🌦 Cut back any broken stems/plants & deadhead spent blooms, retie/support plants that have fallen over. 🌦 Revamp soils, as nutrients may be leached - top with compost or mix in organic plant food. 🌦 Watch for slugs, snails and mildews (and treat organically if found). 🌦 Take advantage of wet soils and catch up on weeding - they won't break off at the root & will pop right out! 🌦 Check drainage ditches again and clear built up sediment/detritus.

New This Week October 10, 2023 Week of Oct. 9th: Moss Poles, Specialty Fertilizers & More Give Your Transitioning Houseplants a Boost! Painters' Moss Poles Did you grab one of the many gorgeous aeroids we had for sale during our Houseplant Spectacular last week? Did one of your tropical babies really take off this summer during the warm months? Then you may benefit from a support, and we highly recommend moss poles for optimal growth, giant leaves, and a lush look as your plant matures! Painters' planted moss poles were just gorgeous this year, and a huge part of that was our homemade poles. We trialed many brands over the last two years, and finally decided we had to make our own. This time we made extra so we can offer them for sale as well as use them for production. Why buy the Painters' pole? We use a steel stake in the core that can handle even the heaviest of plants and won't rot over time like most wood ones. The metal stake is then surrounded by a good inch thick of tightly packed long-fiber sphagnum moss and wrapped in an open plastic mesh. We designed ours to have a thick moss layer so that the plant roots have plenty of room to grow directly into the pole rather than just grasping the outside. When you water the pole from the top (we use a halved water bottle or a funnel), then the moss soaks up a lot of moisture which the plant roots can slowly absorb. It also creates a humid zone around the plant. We also use mesh with large holes so that even the biggest roots can grow into the moss. Try one for yourself! 26" = $24 & 36" = $30 As we transition our houseplants indoors for winter and refresh and reorder our houseplant collections, it's always a good time to do a thorough wipe down for pest prevention and dust removal (not just for looks but so they can properly absorb light), and to give them some extra oomph with a good fertilizer before the cold months. We have trialed quite a few products over the years, and we really like the below fertilizers and treatments by Elm Dirt and October Violet ! Elm Dirt caught our eye because it's created by a mom who wanted to use a product safe for her kids, pets, and pollinators that was also good for the planet. She uses worm castings in the mixes and bottles them in post-consumer plastics. And they REALLY work. We've been taking before and after photos of our plants at home! Fertlizers are a new and improved version of Fertilizers FYI... This is a great pairing for cleaning those leaves so they can get as much light as possible now that they are moved inside for winter.
