Coneflowers Growing Out of Coneflowers?

It's a phenomenon known as Phyllody!

Staff member John discovered coneflowers growing out of coneflowers in his garden this summer! It's a phenomenon known as phyllody. It's not a genetic mutation, but instead is the result of an infection introduced by some kind of sap sucking insect. It disrupts the plants hormones causing it to grow leaves where flower parts should be!
