New This Week November 20, 2023 New Houseplants to Create Some Cozy Bring Your Green Thumb Indoors and Create the Perfect Cozy Space this Winter! This time of year, as the nights are getting longer and dark evenings spread ahead of us, what better way to spend the cozy Hygge season, than with a few new houseplants to refresh our indoor gardens! And do feel free to get close as this plant is non-toxic. Loves warmth, humidity, and consistently moist (not soggy) soil. Rex Begonia Vine $32-38 In bright, indirect light, the Rex Begonia Vine will climb or trail up to 10 feet! Monstera Peru $24 This houseplant appreciates medium to bright indirect light and maybe a Painters’ moss pole , if you prefer. Cordyline Harlequin $38 With a vibrant punch of striped, pink foliage, this 4’ houseplant will be a stunning pop in a quiet winter home. Its upright habit can make for an effortless corner accent, but its vivid appearance screams centerpiece. They are easy to care for and thrive in warmth and humidity with consistently moist (not soggy) soil. Also known as the Good Luck Plant, a cordyline harlequin would make a lovely New Years addition! Domino Peace Lily $16 This variegated houseplant has beautiful markings and large, creamy white blooms. Growing from 1-3’ tall and wide, this low-maintenance air purifier is sleek and stylish. Splashes of variegation range from pale green to cream—a lovely and Christmas-y addition! Find these and many more in our newly arranged houseplant section!

Five New and Unique Trees/Shrubs that We Can't Stop Raving About! New This Week September 2, 2025 Plant Sneak Peek Five New and Unique Trees/Shrubs that We Can't Stop Raving About! If you’re an avid gardener that has seen it all and planted it all, and you’re just looking for the I-can’t-live-without-it specimens then this list is for you! I love when customers ask, “What are YOU most excited about this year? What do you have that’s different/unique?” Well here you have it! (and honestly this is just a list of the trees and shrubs I’ve ordered in because I wanted them for my yard, too!) Hop-tree Ptelea trifoliata A native understory tree in the citrus family that can tolerate wet soil conditions. All parts are aromatic, nectar in blooms attract butterflies, ornamental fruits, and exceptional leaves in threes (but not poison ivy ). Deciduous small tree/large shrub. Redbud ‘Carolina Sweetheart’ and Redbud ‘Flame Thrower’ Cercis canadensis We’ve sold ‘Flame Thrower’ before, but we are thrilled we were able to order such a large quantity of each for fall season! Both varieties have distinct coloration on the leaves. Carolina Sweetheart has white variegated leaf margins and Flame Thrower has a stunning gradation of leaf colors as the leaves emerge in spring. Deciduous tree. Japanese Cedar ‘Rasen Sugi’ Cryptomeria japonica Definitely a twisted specimen plant with extraordinary curled needles and gyrating habit, all turning in a counterclockwise direction! This tree is the most remarkable offering we’ll have this season, in my opinion--a showstopper for sure. Evergreen tree. Seven-Sons Flower Heptacodium miconioides Fragrant blooms in late summer/fall (blooming now), fountain-shaped habit with striped, arching stems–similar appearance to crape myrtle. Name comes from flowers blooming in clusters of seven. Deciduous shrub. Japanese Black Pine Pinus thunbergii Often used in bonsai or in Japanese gardens. Weekly Plant Profile New This Week June 2, 2025 String of Turtles Weekly Plant Profile Peperomia prostrata This may be our favorite houseplant. Incredibly easy care, it’s so great for beginners, but also not something you see everywhere and truly lovely! Its beautifully patterned leaves look like teeny turtle shells! String of Turtles is our favorite ‘string of’ houseplant because it is much more tolerant of a range of light and moisture than others. Grow it in everything from a sunny window to a lower shelf receiving no direct or bright light. The variegation in the tiny adorable leaves is best when in indirect/diffused light–so it rivals string of hearts for being able to handle lower light spots. The succulent leaves hold water and therefore can tolerate forgetful plant parents (underwatering is better than overwatering much like most strings). It looks great and works well in small pots (being a slower grower), but can also trail beautifully in hanging containers as it matures. Plus it's an adorable favorite for fairy gardens and terrariums. Find sizes, prices, and availability on our website A very affordable new plant friend!

Celebrating Pollinator Week June 16th - June 20th New This Week June 16, 2025 Painters Pollinator Pics & Prize Winner! Celebrating Pollinator Week June 16th - June 20th Your pollinator photos were a delight! Y'all got skillz! Thank you to everyone who submitted photos for Pollinator Week at Painters. Check out the collage of submissions from customers and Painters staff below! We love to see the whole spectrum of plants that provide resources for our pollinator friends, and when you think about all the kinds of different pollinators out there, it’s kind of amazing!! We adore all the flamboyant butterflies and pollen-laden bumbles! And don’t forget about the smaller native bees ( Did you know that North Carolina is home to over 500 species of native bees?! ) , lesser known or appreciated pollinators like flies, beetles and wasps, moths and bats that mostly pollinate under cover of darkness, and hummingbirds! The winner of our Pollinator Pic Drawing (from the customer submissions) was Amber from neighboring farm and local business Inspira Homestead!!! Amber's photo is of a beautiful Red-spotted Purple butterfly on Painters pollinator favorite Anise Hyssop. She will be taking home a flat of Owen family best-loved pollinator plants including: Joe Pye, Culver’s Root, Mountain Mint, Wild Bergamot, Hoary Vervain, and Mexican Sunflower ( because she already has Anise Hyssop, we switched it out for our favorite annual pollinator plant ). Each of these 6 plants are easy to grow, adaptable to a range of soils, and appreciate full sun. We highly recommend them all for your own pollinator spaces! Did you know you can create a certified pollinator habitat even with a few patio planters? Check out BeeCityUSA's certification here - it's easy, and putting up a sign is a great way to show your dedication and encourage neighbors to join in! And now for the real heroes: Hip Hip Hooray for Pollinators! Note: Plants native to our general region are in bold. Let us know if you have any corrections or additions to our insect I.D. - we are not entomologists, just enthusiasts!

One of our favorite shrubs that bloom in late winter, with beautiful, fragrant blooms! New This Week February 27, 2023 Plant of the Week: Winter Daphne One of our favorite shrubs that bloom in late winter, with beautiful, fragrant blooms! Winter Daphne (White or Pink Blooming ) is highly regarded for its strong scent - possibly the most delightful scent of any flower! This shrub blooms in late winter (late February and March) along the terminal stems. It does best planted under a small deciduous tree where it is provided with shade in the hot summer months, but allowed to stand out in a winter landscape. An added bonus is that it is deer resistant! Plant in an area where everyone can enjoy the fragrance, and allow for a mature height and width of 4-5 feet. Daphne makes a great addition to a winter garden, but do note this shrub can be a bit challenging to grow if you're not aware of a few of its care needs: 1) Daphne does not tolerate soils with poor drainage...we're looking at you, clay soils! Root rot diseases associated with poorly drained soils are likely the major cause of failure in the landscape. Ideally, plant in well-drained woodland soil with plenty of humus or plant in a slightly raised bed with amended soil to ensure adequate drainage. 2) While Winter Daphne can tolerate full sun, it prefers a protected area providing moderate shade. 3) Avoid pruning - Daphne does not heal well from cuts into mature wood, so it's best to avoid pruning. However, "pinching" or taking cuttings from the slender tips of long shoots on the current year's growth can make the plant fuller and promote heavier blooming.
