New This Week October 10, 2022 Plant of the Week: Pineapple & Mexican Bush Sage Two of our absolute favorite tender perennials for fall color and pollinator support Two of our absolute favorites for fall color and pollinator support, these beauties are also currently on sale! Mexican Bush Sage is most popular amongst the bees, and Pineapple Sage is a hummingbird magnet, though many other pollinators visit them as well! You can’t beat this incredible show of color and profuse blooms in the fall when so many other things are on their way out. These are both tender perennials in our area, though the Pineapple Sage is a bit tougher… we recommend planting in a sunny spot with some wind protection or near a building for extra warmth during winter. These are both great cut flowers as well- the Mexican Bush Sage lasts well over a week in water, and also does well dried! Pineapple Sage Come load up on these beauties!

New This Week April 3, 2023 Plant of the Week: Dwarf Crested Iris One of our favorite native plants for shade! These gorgeous WNC natives are blooming right now in our woods! Typically only 4-6” in height, Dwarf Crested Iris spread to form a ground cover when in their native habitat of peaty woodland soils and part shade. The showy blooms appear March-May depending on your location, and attract and support hummingbirds and bees. A nice big patch on the Owen's driveway! In the garden they are happiest with our native, acidic soil, and appreciate some leaf mulch to increase organic matter and hold in moisture. Due to their short stature, we love using them in the borders of our shade gardens. Once established, they should require no additional care if soil and light preferences are followed. These lovely spring flowers are deer resistant and add a stunning pop of color to woodland settings. If you aren't fortunate enough to have them in your backyard (like the Owens), or if you simply want more, we have plenty of them available at Painters! Native Area: Eastern United States USDA Growing Zones: 3a–9a Height: 4–9 inches Sun Exposure: Partial shade; tolerates full sun

New This Week August 12, 2022 Monstera Deliciosa Fruit We've been waiting months to try this tropical fruit rumored to be so delicious it gave the plant its name! Last July we noticed flowers blooming on many of our Monstera deliciosa specimen plants that live in our greenhouse. With the help of some hand pollination (just in case!), the flowers produced fruit and all of us at Painters have been patiently watching it ripen on the plant for the last 13 months. In the wild, Monsteras regularly flower and fruit. Ripe Monstera deliciosa fruit The fruit typically takes 6-12 months to ripen and is said to be so delicious it inspired the plant's name. This week the big day finally arrived and we got our first taste! See what we thought below! It really was DELICIOUS!

New This Week December 1, 2022 Foraging for Natural Holiday Decor & Greenery Our team had a fun day in nature collecting local berries, greenery, and more! On Tuesday our team headed into the woods to reconnect with nature and gather local berries, greenery, and branches for our holiday baskets and planters! Everyone enjoyed the beautiful day and fresh air and found lots of goodies on their hunt! We collected American Holly, White Pine, Rhododendron, Doghobble, and varied pine cones, which we combined with cuttings from our Painters gardens of Winterberry, Red Twig Dogwood, Southern Magnolia and more for holiday hanging baskets and planters. (These are cut items but planted in watered soil so they last for long periods both indoors and out - our baskets last year lasted from December through late February!) Our friends at Carolina Natives Nursery put together a list of nine native plants great to decorate with naturally this holiday season . Click below to see more fun photos and learn about our process. Team members assessing a giant American Holly Tree... where to begin?! Dana's kitty PK "helped" by giving approving chin rubs to the Southern Magnolia branches. Lots of White Pine - we love the soft texture in arrangements! We also cut from several planted arborvitae onour property. Yanet adding a few purchased berries to the indoor planters (a bit more color!) We loved seeing team members give personal touches to their creations - each is slightly different! We have two main designs on the baskets - one featuring more White Pine, and the other featuring more Arborvitae.

New This Week September 14, 2022 We Can't Get Enough of These Air Plants Plus care and display tips! Air plants are a stunning and unique addition to any house plant collection. The don't need to be potted in soil and we love displaying in macrame air plant hangers from Line by Line Macrame . We've got a beautiful selection including some massive statement plants available this week! First-time air plant parent? Check out some care tips below - they're super easy once you know how to keep them happy! AIR PLANT CARE WATER Completely submerge your air plants in water for 20 minutes every 1-2 weeks (every week in winter when our homes tend to be drier). After soaking, shake off excess water and set them upside down to dry before returning to their display. This method is much easier and typically more effective than regularly misting them. LIGHT Air plants prefer bright, indirect light - either via sunlight of grow lights/bright indoor lighting. Avoid direct sun as they can sunburn. DISPLAY IDEAS Air plants make great additions to open air terrariums, bowls/planters and display cages. You can also tuck them into driftwood, hang them with fishing line, or find air plant hangers like our favorites from Line by Line Macrame . Avoid planting them in soil and ensure that they have some air flow. Such a fun plant to get creative with, and they make great gifts!
