New This Week October 10, 2023 Week of Oct. 9th: Moss Poles, Specialty Fertilizers & More Give Your Transitioning Houseplants a Boost! Painters' Moss Poles Did you grab one of the many gorgeous aeroids we had for sale during our Houseplant Spectacular last week? Did one of your tropical babies really take off this summer during the warm months? Then you may benefit from a support, and we highly recommend moss poles for optimal growth, giant leaves, and a lush look as your plant matures! Painters' planted moss poles were just gorgeous this year, and a huge part of that was our homemade poles. We trialed many brands over the last two years, and finally decided we had to make our own. This time we made extra so we can offer them for sale as well as use them for production. Why buy the Painters' pole? We use a steel stake in the core that can handle even the heaviest of plants and won't rot over time like most wood ones. The metal stake is then surrounded by a good inch thick of tightly packed long-fiber sphagnum moss and wrapped in an open plastic mesh. We designed ours to have a thick moss layer so that the plant roots have plenty of room to grow directly into the pole rather than just grasping the outside. When you water the pole from the top (we use a halved water bottle or a funnel), then the moss soaks up a lot of moisture which the plant roots can slowly absorb. It also creates a humid zone around the plant. We also use mesh with large holes so that even the biggest roots can grow into the moss. Try one for yourself! 26" = $24 & 36" = $30 As we transition our houseplants indoors for winter and refresh and reorder our houseplant collections, it's always a good time to do a thorough wipe down for pest prevention and dust removal (not just for looks but so they can properly absorb light), and to give them some extra oomph with a good fertilizer before the cold months. We have trialed quite a few products over the years, and we really like the below fertilizers and treatments by Elm Dirt and October Violet ! Elm Dirt caught our eye because it's created by a mom who wanted to use a product safe for her kids, pets, and pollinators that was also good for the planet. She uses worm castings in the mixes and bottles them in post-consumer plastics. And they REALLY work. We've been taking before and after photos of our plants at home! Fertlizers are a new and improved version of Fertilizers FYI... This is a great pairing for cleaning those leaves so they can get as much light as possible now that they are moved inside for winter.

We know you are reading last year's garden notes and researching plants. So for those of your who like to plan, here's a bit of Painters Homework as you prepare for your visit. First things first! When to come and where we are! MARCH 6 - JUNE 30 Wednesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays: 9am-5pm Saturdays & Sundays: 9am-4pm Mondays & Tuesdays: CLOSED And whether it's your first time here or you'd like a refresher for where to get started shopping, review our Greenhouse Map so you can hit the ground running! What we have for you! Our Availability Lists for the 2024 Spring Season are live on the website! Note that not all plants are available for sale at the same time. All items listed are intended for sale during our spring retail season, and will be made available for purchase as they reach optimum maturity and health to ensure success in your gardens! Additionally, as you plan your gardens and future landscaping projects, find recommendations and Painter's favorites in the categories under Our Plants. And check back for more categories as they are added! www.paintersgreenhouse.com Explore Our Plants | Painters Greenhouse Discover the wide selection of natives, perennials, flowering annuals, trees & shrubs, tropicals, houseplants, and aquatics available for sale at Painters Greenhouse. We grow over 1,000 species ourselves onsite and Signage Changes: Painters is committed to growing and providing healthy, robust natives, nativars, and non-native plants. In addition to adding many more straight species natives to our availability, we aim to provide customers with the information needed to make decisions on their own garden diversity and landscaping needs. Find new signage to direct you in your selections! Read More about the Natives Varieties we are growing for this season! Price Changes: Because we feel strongly that food gardens should be available and accessible too all, Painters has LOWERED prices on annual herbs and 3 1/2" vegetable starts. Come get your greens! Other Changes: Growing and learning is part of the process here at Painters. We always aim to provide plants that are healthy and will thrive locally in WNC. There are many changes made as best practices are improved upon. This year, because vining annuals and nasturtiums grow so well from seed (and often are more successful direct sown than transplanted from a potted plant start), we have removed the starts from our program and instead are providing seed from a favorite local supplier, Sow True Seed! Find them (amongst many others) in our cooler! Updated Plant Warranty Information: www.paintersgreenhouse.com Greenhouse Policies & FAQ | Painters Greenhouse Anything else? New This Week April 2, 2024 "New Releases" at Painters this Week April 3rd - Coming to a Greenhouse Near You New this week at Painters! For those of you who have already been visiting, you will enjoy some changes here at Painters as we are bringing out more items from our cold frames and lower greenhouses to fill our retail tables, including our spring-blooming, sun-loving perennials! You will find foxgloves, amsonia, delphinium, dianthus, globe flower and more! See our availability lists for pricing ! As many of you know, Painters grows most of our stock here on site, especially our wide variety of herbaceous perennials. And we cultivate these perennials so that they emerge naturally in season for a high success rate in your gardens. The items you find on our tables may not be in full bloom like these photos, but that's a good thing. By allowing them to put out foliage and blooms with the season, they will be much healthier and have a much higher success rate in your gardens long-term. (Just ask our long-time customers about the success rate of their Painters perennials vs those from box stores or shops that have forced them into early maturity and blooming.) In addition to perennials, we've added more houseplants and succulents and some fabulous tropical treasures! Prices and quantities on our availability lists. And these carnivorous plants! So amazing! For those looking for trees and shrubs, we have local suppliers and have sourced some beautiful, mature Coral Bark Japanese Maples. We've also restocked our deciduous azaleas, Gibraltar and My Mary; plus we've added a great selection of blooming evergreen azaleas. Pictured here: Girard's Fuchsia and Delaware White. For customers seeking a bit of tropical paradise, this week we've added a variety of citrus trees and bushes . See our availability lists for pricing ! Plus, we still have a nice stock of fruit trees, blueberry bushes, and more! And of course we have a huge selection of annuals, hanging baskets for sun and shade, tropical ferns and stunning combo pots! Come on out see it all for yourself!

  • What's New this Week at Painters Greenhouse

New This Week April 22, 2024 Plant Spotlight: Chokeberry Ornamental, beneficial, and delicious! Why chokeberry you ask? It’s a low-maintenance native shrub that offers beautiful multi-season interest, significant wildlife support, and wide-ranging health benefits for humans. With both Earth Day and Arbor Day this week, we thought it appropriate to choose a native shrub or tree for the Plant of the Week! This spring you’ll find Black Chokeberry, Red Chokeberry, and Purple Chokeberry (a cross of red and black) here at Painters. We are offering both straight species options as well as some beautiful native cultivars. Chokeberry is a great alternative to brilliantly colored but invasive plants such as nandina or burning bush - it offers similarly brilliant red or orange fall color, and you can find a range of size options amongst the nativars. Red chokeberry holds its rich red berries well into the winter, but the black and purple chokeberry also have lovely fruit. The berries are a nutritious food source for many bird species (including the gorgeous cedar waxwing), while the dense growth provides great nesting and shelter habitat. All three types of chokeberry have lovely spring blooms with pale pink to white flower clusters covering the plant and attracting and feeding butterflies and other pollinators. Chokeberry is truly a hands-off plant. It has evolved to tolerate a range of conditions - though it does prefer more moist sites and part shade, it can also grow in full sun and drier conditions. The red chokeberry tends to grow more like a small tree, with a more open habit and bare trunk, so it looks best in the back of gardens or with shorter plants layered in front of it. Black chokeberry is denser, and several nativars have been cultivated to be low-growing and work well as low hedges. While the name doesn’t exactly encourage eating it, the fruit of the Black Chokeberry has been shown to have some pretty amazing benefits to human health. The fruit is definitely astringent and may make your mouth pucker when eaten fresh, but the flavor is really tasty when sweetened in a jam, wine, or simple syrup. Below are our chokeberry options currently available: Red Chokeberry Aronia arbutifolia 3 Gal for $42.00 NATIVE deciduous shrub (z4-8) full sun, 6-10' tall, 3-6' wide White spring blooms, brilliant fall foliage, attractive winter bark Widely adaptable, tolerant of wet soil Beautiful red berries are tart and bitter but can be used for jams and jellies Red Chokeberry 'Brilliantissima' Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima' 2 Gal for $26.00 NATIVAR deciduous shrub (z4-9) full-part sun, 6-10' tall, 3-5' wide Brilliant red foliage in fall, white blooms and glossy red berries; excellent wildlife value Adaptable and compact, tolerant of a wide range of conditions; good native alternative to burning bush Black chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa 2 Gal for $28.00 NATIVE deciduous shrub (z3-8) full sun-part shade, 3-6' tall and wide White spring flowers, black autumn berries; excellent wildlife value Vibrant orange-purple foliage in fall Tolerant of wet soil, good choice for rain gardens or water margins; spreading habit Black Chokeberry 'Viking' Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking' 2 Gal for $24.00 NATIVAR deciduous fruiting shrub (z3-9) full sun, 3-6' tall and wide Cultivar developed for orchards, with larger fruits than the species; fragrant white spring blooms, brilliant red fall foliage Nutrient-rich berries are too tart to eat fresh but perfect for jams and juices Purple Chokeberry 'Aron' Aronia prunifolia 'Aron' 2 Gal for $26.00 NATIVAR deciduous shrub (z3-8) full sun-part shade, 5-8' tall, 3-6' wide Hybrid of red and black chokeberry with white spring flowers and dark purple summer fruits; superb autumn color Thrives in boggy soil; tolerant of occasional flooding
