  • What's New this Week at Painters Greenhouse

New This Week April 22, 2024 Plant Spotlight: Chokeberry Ornamental, beneficial, and delicious! Why chokeberry you ask? It’s a low-maintenance native shrub that offers beautiful multi-season interest, significant wildlife support, and wide-ranging health benefits for humans. With both Earth Day and Arbor Day this week, we thought it appropriate to choose a native shrub or tree for the Plant of the Week! This spring you’ll find Black Chokeberry, Red Chokeberry, and Purple Chokeberry (a cross of red and black) here at Painters. We are offering both straight species options as well as some beautiful native cultivars. Chokeberry is a great alternative to brilliantly colored but invasive plants such as nandina or burning bush - it offers similarly brilliant red or orange fall color, and you can find a range of size options amongst the nativars. Red chokeberry holds its rich red berries well into the winter, but the black and purple chokeberry also have lovely fruit. The berries are a nutritious food source for many bird species (including the gorgeous cedar waxwing), while the dense growth provides great nesting and shelter habitat. All three types of chokeberry have lovely spring blooms with pale pink to white flower clusters covering the plant and attracting and feeding butterflies and other pollinators. Chokeberry is truly a hands-off plant. It has evolved to tolerate a range of conditions - though it does prefer more moist sites and part shade, it can also grow in full sun and drier conditions. The red chokeberry tends to grow more like a small tree, with a more open habit and bare trunk, so it looks best in the back of gardens or with shorter plants layered in front of it. Black chokeberry is denser, and several nativars have been cultivated to be low-growing and work well as low hedges. While the name doesn’t exactly encourage eating it, the fruit of the Black Chokeberry has been shown to have some pretty amazing benefits to human health. The fruit is definitely astringent and may make your mouth pucker when eaten fresh, but the flavor is really tasty when sweetened in a jam, wine, or simple syrup. Below are our chokeberry options currently available: Red Chokeberry Aronia arbutifolia 3 Gal for $42.00 NATIVE deciduous shrub (z4-8) full sun, 6-10' tall, 3-6' wide White spring blooms, brilliant fall foliage, attractive winter bark Widely adaptable, tolerant of wet soil Beautiful red berries are tart and bitter but can be used for jams and jellies Red Chokeberry 'Brilliantissima' Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima' 2 Gal for $26.00 NATIVAR deciduous shrub (z4-9) full-part sun, 6-10' tall, 3-5' wide Brilliant red foliage in fall, white blooms and glossy red berries; excellent wildlife value Adaptable and compact, tolerant of a wide range of conditions; good native alternative to burning bush Black chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa 2 Gal for $28.00 NATIVE deciduous shrub (z3-8) full sun-part shade, 3-6' tall and wide White spring flowers, black autumn berries; excellent wildlife value Vibrant orange-purple foliage in fall Tolerant of wet soil, good choice for rain gardens or water margins; spreading habit Black Chokeberry 'Viking' Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking' 2 Gal for $24.00 NATIVAR deciduous fruiting shrub (z3-9) full sun, 3-6' tall and wide Cultivar developed for orchards, with larger fruits than the species; fragrant white spring blooms, brilliant red fall foliage Nutrient-rich berries are too tart to eat fresh but perfect for jams and juices Purple Chokeberry 'Aron' Aronia prunifolia 'Aron' 2 Gal for $26.00 NATIVAR deciduous shrub (z3-8) full sun-part shade, 5-8' tall, 3-6' wide Hybrid of red and black chokeberry with white spring flowers and dark purple summer fruits; superb autumn color Thrives in boggy soil; tolerant of occasional flooding

New This Week April 2, 2024 "New Releases" at Painters this Week April 3rd - Coming to a Greenhouse Near You New this week at Painters! For those of you who have already been visiting, you will enjoy some changes here at Painters as we are bringing out more items from our cold frames and lower greenhouses to fill our retail tables, including our spring-blooming, sun-loving perennials! You will find foxgloves, amsonia, delphinium, dianthus, globe flower and more! See our availability lists for pricing ! As many of you know, Painters grows most of our stock here on site, especially our wide variety of herbaceous perennials. And we cultivate these perennials so that they emerge naturally in season for a high success rate in your gardens. The items you find on our tables may not be in full bloom like these photos, but that's a good thing. By allowing them to put out foliage and blooms with the season, they will be much healthier and have a much higher success rate in your gardens long-term. (Just ask our long-time customers about the success rate of their Painters perennials vs those from box stores or shops that have forced them into early maturity and blooming.) In addition to perennials, we've added more houseplants and succulents and some fabulous tropical treasures! Prices and quantities on our availability lists. And these carnivorous plants! So amazing! For those looking for trees and shrubs, we have local suppliers and have sourced some beautiful, mature Coral Bark Japanese Maples. We've also restocked our deciduous azaleas, Gibraltar and My Mary; plus we've added a great selection of blooming evergreen azaleas. Pictured here: Girard's Fuchsia and Delaware White. For customers seeking a bit of tropical paradise, this week we've added a variety of citrus trees and bushes . See our availability lists for pricing ! Plus, we still have a nice stock of fruit trees, blueberry bushes, and more! And of course we have a huge selection of annuals, hanging baskets for sun and shade, tropical ferns and stunning combo pots! Come on out see it all for yourself!

New This Week April 29, 2024 Plant of the Week: Dichondra 'Silver Falls' To Celebrate Catawba Falls! We love this vigorous and reliable accent plant! It has small, rounded and soft, pewter-colored leaves on silver stems that trail over the edge of pots, window boxes, planters, hanging baskets, or even rock walls. Your own cascading falls! It’s heat and drought tolerant and reliably stands up to high temps and even humidity, as long as it’s not overwatered or grown in soggy soil. And it can recover quickly if watered after wilting–which makes for a very forgiving hanging basket or porch pot! 'Silver Falls' in a sweet Part-Shade combo pot Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ can easily be grown in full sun, but will grow in partial sun as well. • Native Plants | Painters Greenhouse

NATIVE PLANTS Native plants--those that existed in North America before European settlement--have evolved to thrive in our specific climate, soils, and temperatures. Our native plant selection typically averages around 300 varieties and each season we increase the numbers of straight-species natives we sow and sell. We care deeply about growing plants that support our pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. The majority of the native plants we sell can be found naturally growing in the WNC area, but we also include some that are native to the general region. Our natives are grown here at the greenhouse with the exception of some shrubs and trees from local nurseries. • What's New this Week at Painters Greenhouse

New This Week June 13, 2023 Plant of the Week: Zinnias Bursting with color and exuding a cheerful charm, Zinnias are a popular choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners. With their stunning array of blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, and more, these annual flowers bring a delightful touch of summer to any garden and also make for beautiful cut flowers. From compact varieties perfect for containers to towering cultivars for eye-catching borders, there's a Zinnia for every space! Zinnias are truly one of the most colorful, long-blooming annuals you can add to your garden. They come in endless colors, patterns and shapes. Zinnias thrive in full sun, with adequate air flow (super damp summers can cause some mildew issues). Make sure to wait to sow or plant until the soil warms up, as they need heat. Profuse bloomers, often a healthy plant will bloom from late spring up until frost if deadheaded and fertilized occasionally. To be sure you have zinnias in full bloom the whole season, you can sow or plant a second batch mid-summer to extend and improve the bloom period. As part of the Asteraceae family of composite flowers (which includes sunflowers, coneflowers, daisies and more), Zinnias are beloved by bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. While they are not native plants, these annuals provide additional nectar to pollinators looking for food, especially in later months or periods between various native blooms. We highly recommend mixing them in with your milkweed, salvia, asters, goldenrod, joe pye, agastache, verbena and other pollinator supporting plants! The most beloved by pollinators are the single-flowering, and especially the taller cultivars such as Benary's Giants. We currently are sold out of the giants, but do have several beautiful colors of disease resistant, single-blooming zinnias available. Bees cannot see red, but will still be attracted to red or orange zinnias, likely because they are attracted to the ultraviolet markings on the petals. Many flowers have UV pigments on their petals that are invisible to the human eye, but that seem to be designed to attract pollinators - highlighting where the nectar (and pollen) can be found. Try this at home! You can find an ultraviolet flashlight for $20, and have hours of fun in the dark getting a glimpse at what the world looks like to many pollinators and other creatures that see this spectrum! The Owens recently did this, but unfortunately only had a cellphone to document this zinnia glowing with UV at the center.

New This Week March 20, 2023 Locally Grown is the Painters Difference When you shop at Painters Greenhouse, not only are you supporting a local small business, you are also shopping from one of the largest selections of locally grown plants in WNC. When you shop at Painters Greenhouse not only are you supporting a local small business, you are also shopping from one of the largest selections of locally grown plants in WNC. We are proud to grow the majority of our plants on site in our greenhouses from seeds, cuttings, bareroot, or plugs to mature potted plants ready for you to take home! Sara sowing seeds last fall. These baby Black-Eyed Susan plants were sown in September by Sara, transplanted into plug trays several weeks later by Beth, and then Moises and Diego cared for them in our cold frame over the winter (this allowed for proper vernalization - the long cold period needed to promote flowering). Beth bumping our seedlings up into plug trays. This batch was one of several rounds grown throughout the year. Soon they will be planted in pots by Maria, Azia, Kerry, Ana and Yanet, then moved back to the cold frame while they root in… Our propogation team transplanting plugs into the pots they will be sold in. ...and before you know it you’ll see them for sale on the retail floor. It takes precise planning, years of experience, months of growing, and a team of 10 plus people to get these plants ready for you to take home at the ideal time to plant. (Now consider the fact that we do this for over a thousand varieties of annuals, perennials, houseplants, trees, shrubs, and more!) So why do we do it? Growing a majority of our own plants reduces our carbon footprint significantly, means we know the entire history of the plant and can control everything that comes in contact with it, and helps us keep our prices competitive. It means less shipping trucks on the road and reducing fossil fuel usage by forgoing the need to have lots of mature plants delivered - short of some of our houseplants, anything we don’t grow ourselves is grown within a hundred miles. This is the way Painters has done it for 50 years. While some may think we are crazy to grow and sell direct from the same location (it definitely comes with many challenges), we love growing and we love the face-to-face with our dedicated customers. We are deeply grateful for the growers and production members behind our diverse and healthy inventory, thankful for the talented horticulturists nearby who wholesale many of the species we don’t grow ourselves, and grateful to all our loyal customers who value the Painters difference.
