Plant Spotlight and Sale

Japanese Holly Fern

JAPANESE HOLLY FERN

Cyrtomium falcatum

  • Perennial (z6-10) part-full shade

  • 1-2' tall, 2-3' wide

  • Evergreen fronds resemble holly branches, hence the common name

  • Easy to grow, thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil; deer and rabbit resistant

  • Aka fish tail fern

As one of the few perennial ferns that stays lush for most of the year, the Japanese Holly Fern is exceptionally resilient. While a harsh winter might cause some minor browning or die-back, it bounces back with fresh, vibrant growth every spring. From spring through late fall, it showcases large, glossy, deep-green fronds that maintain their structure beautifully. Unlike Christmas Ferns—which tend to start strong in the spring and then wilt and flatten in the summer heat—or Ostrich and Sensitive Ferns, which easily get crispy in heat, the Japanese Holly Fern holds its shape. Thanks to its thick, leathery foliage, it is uniquely tough and highly resistant to heat, sunburn, frost, and wind damage.

Large mature specimens in 6.5” pots are now $10.50 through Sunday, May 31st!
