Solidago speciosa (Showy Goldenrod)

  • NATIVE perennial (z3-8) full sun, 2-3' tall and wide

  • Fluffy yellow blooms mid to late summer, truly among the showiest of all goldenrods, fantastic for pollinators

  • Wrongfully accused of causing hay fever -- the real culprits are wind-pollinated plants like ragweed

Solidago rugosa (Wrinkleleaf Goldenrod)

  • Perennial (z4-8) full sun, 3-5' tall, 2-3' wide

  • Panicles of showy yellow flowers late summer to fall, fantastic for pollinators

  • When happy, may self-seed and spread by rhizomes

  • Can tolerate light shade and swampy, wet soil; good choice for rain gardens

Solidago 'Golden Baby' (Goldkind Goldenrod)

  • Perennial (z2-9) full-part sun, 18-24'' tall, 8-12'' wide

  • Plumes of bright yellow flowers mid-summer to fall

  • Likes to sprawl in rich soil, but shallow roots make unwanted spreading easy to contain

Physostegia virginiana 'Vivid' (Obedient Plant)

NATIVAR perennial (z3-9) full sun, 1-2' tall, 12-18'' wide

  • Dense spikes of rich pink blooms all summer; when pushed in any direction, flowers temporarily stay put, hence the 'obedient' common name

  • Spreading habit; tolerant of wet soil

  • Compact variety with sturdy, upright stems; less aggressive spread than species
